About

Jameson Road is a landfill facility which has existed on this site since the 1970s.

The site holds an environmental permit to accept non-hazardous waste for disposal and it is regulated by the Environment Agency.

History

The area around the Jameson Road site has a long history of industrial development dating back to the 19th Century.

The area has been used for the production and processing of salt, ammonia, chlorine and other chemicals over the last 150 years.

How the waste industry works

Ever wondered what happens to the waste that you put in your bin? The non-recyclable waste doesn’t go straight to landfill – it goes through a complex process to remove every piece of recyclable material possible, and only around 5% ends up in a landfill site.

Future Plans

Although the site has planning permission to operate until 2033, if we tip at our maximum permitted levels it could be closed by 2028.

The site would then be restored and landscaped. Our aim is to work with the local community to agree a planting and restoration scheme that will deliver bio diversity net gain.

Update – 17 April

The 11 new gas wells are continuing to perform well, but we are constantly fine tuning their settings to achieve maximum odour extraction.

Update – 11 April

Work is continuing in Cell 6. Our aim is to bring the cell up to approved contour levels as soon as possible so that we can get a permanent cap on it earlier, rather than wait for the completion of the site.

Update – 9 April

Last night the Environment Agency confirmed that the work to drill and install the 11 deep wells conformed with all conditions of the Suspension Notice and as such, a Withdrawal Notice was issued.

Update – 4 April

The 11 new deep gas wells in Cell 6 continue to work well and odour levels from the site are dropping. We anticipate that these will drop further as the wells are balanced.

Update – 1st April

All 11 wells are now connected up and functioning. There has already been a reduction in odour level - even though the wind has been blowing over Fleetwood today. The odour levels should drop further as the wells are balanced to maximise gas capture.

Update – 28 March

As promised, the drilling of 11 deep wells was completed today and these have now been connected to the gas capture infrastructure. These are now extracting gas and will be balanced to achieve maximum effectiveness.

Community

We are looking to work closely with the community regarding ongoing operations, community funding and eventual site restoration.

Our community liaison group comprises local MPs, councillors, residents and regulatory agencies. The group meets regularly and the minutes from these meetings are available here…
