Ever wondered what happens to your waste?
Ever wondered what happens to your waste once your wheelie bin has been emptied?
Only a very small percentage (if any at all) goes to landfill.
Waste is sent to a transfer station where it is sorted to remove any further items that can be recycled.
Any green waste or packaging contaminated with food can be used to generate biogas through anaerobic digestion (AD). The remaining residual waste from the AD plant can be dried and used as fuel.
Any remaining residual waste after sorting is sent to an Energy from Waste (EfW) plant where it is burned to produce electricity.
If the EfW plants are running at full capacity and cannot accept any further deliveries, any remaining residual waste that cannot be recycled, digested or burned is sent to landfill (around 5 per cent).
