We are aware of higher than normal odour levels throughout the back end of last week and into the weekend. The increase was noted across a variety of odour types, particularly rotten eggs, sewage, fish, fresh waste and perfume-like odours.
The “rotten eggs” odour from the site was due to a combination of us having to work in a confined space within validated area of Cell 6B whilst we await full validation of the remainder of the cell, and this work coinciding with an extended period of very low wind speeds, with an average local wind speed of only 0.27 m/s. Such calm atmospheric conditions can significantly reduce the dispersion of smells, leading to a build-up and increased detectability of odours, particularly during early morning periods.
We are hoping that the EA will validate the remaining area of Cell 6B in the next couple of days so that we can proceed with the installation of the next phase of gas capture infrastructure and odours will reduce swiftly and significantly.
