Update – 21 May 2025

The latest findings from weekly odour monitoring again confirm that the Jameson Road landfill site continues to play only a small role in the overall odour profile of the area.

During the week commencing 12 May 2025, a total of 172 odour tests were carried out across key locations in Fleetwood, as part of a continued commitment to transparency and proactive community engagement. Out of these, 151 tests showed no detectable landfill-related odour, and only 21 detections were attributed to landfill or mixed sources — the majority of which were recorded in areas of low sensitivity, such as the landfill compound and its immediate surroundings.

Importantly, while 11 detections occurred in high-sensitivity locations — including Springfield Terrace, Cala Gran, Broadwater Entrance, and Browns Lane — these events were intermittent, of low intensity, and influenced largely by prevailing wind conditions. The findings support the view that occasional landfill-related odours are now more localised and limited in impact.

The wider monitoring effort continues to highlight that the dominant odours now affecting residential areas now appear to be sewage-related, particularly during periods of low tide and calm or onshore winds. These odours are often described as stagnant or faecal in character.

The data shows that we are dealing with a complex environment, where a number of different odour sources interact. It is important to recognise that while landfill odours do occur, they are not  the sole contributor to the overall odour profile affecting Fleetwood residents. Our monitoring programme is designed to ensure we remain vigilant and respond to any issues promptly.

Since the start of monitoring, a total of 633 assessments have been conducted, with just 57 confirming any presence of landfill-related odours. These results reinforce the site’s positive trend and commitment to responsible site management.

The monitoring team continues to work collaboratively with stakeholders, including local residents and regulatory bodies, to ensure that odour control measures remain effective. Ongoing efforts include the improvement of capping processes, installation of new deep wells, enhancement of odour suppression systems, and responsive scheduling of landfill operations to minimise community impact.

Looking ahead, weekly reports will remain publicly available on the website, and residents are encouraged to stay informed and share their feedback. Regular updates will continue to help ensure that all parties are working toward a cleaner, more comfortable environment for everyone in the Fleetwood area.
